Mission & Social Concerns Committee
This Committee is responsible for taking an advocacy role in promoting research, providing relevant information to the congregation, and action. Check the Calendar for details on time and meeting dates. The committee's responsibilities are divided into teams of two working in the following areas:
Mission Work
- organizing participation by Knox members in the annual Wesley Walk for Kids who walk, ride, or jog each June, joining some 30 other congregations, assisting local families in providing for their basic needs.
- organizing, preparing, and serving at the annual Wesley Dinner for the homeless and others in need of a meal; the Dinner is served by members of Knox on one Sunday in August.
- supporting the work of the St. David's Youth Mission in conjunction with the Sarah Dunning Auxiliary to the Women's Missionary Society, and the Knox Outreach Committee.
- seeking out ways in which to best allocate available resources each year for Humanitarian Aid.
- informing the congregation about the work of the Presbyterian World Service and Development, encouraging our Church members to support this fund financially through regular contributions, or for special occasions, when a crisis somewhere in the world demands immediate action.
- promoting financial support by our membership, sharing in the work and mission of the nearly 1000 Presbyterian congregations across Canada.
Food
- raising awareness of the work of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, which has connections in our local community, where farmers grow crops on their own land, providing their knowledge, labor and much more. Knox, as an urban community, assists in funding the CFGB to cover some of the costs of transportation, shipping, and delivery to overseas destinations.
- collecting food items donated by members of Knox and assists at the Dundas Food Bank.
Communication Materials
- publishing a quarterly newsletter, Opportunity Knox, which serves as a link between the members of our congregation, the Church, and the world community.
- attempting to increase the readership of the Presbyterian Record, the national magazine of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
Social Issues
- promoting greater awareness about the work of the Association of Dundas Churches among our own members and in the larger Dundas community.
- reviewing current social issues, as seen from a Christian perspective, to provide the congregation with opportunities for thoughtful response or action.
